On the boundaries
The NDIA publishes regional figures against 2016 ASGS codes. These are the ABS 2021 boundaries, which are the current published release.
That join was checked rather than assumed. Every one of the 88 SA4 regions and all 333 matched SA3 regions the NDIA reports carry an identical code in both vintages, so the mapping is exact for every region drawn here. The handful of SA3s that do not match are external territories — Christmas Island, the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Jervis Bay and Norfolk Island — plus Urriarra–Namadgi, none of which have enrolled SDA.
Reading the colours
Bins are quantiles, not equal intervals — a handful of large metropolitan regions would otherwise flatten everywhere else into one shade.
Regions the NDIA does not report, and values it suppresses because the count is under 11, are drawn in the neutral no data fill and excluded from the colour scale entirely. An absent value never renders as a low one.
Layers marked est are SDA Atlas derivations rather than published NDIA figures. Implied occupancy in particular divides two different tables and is not a vacancy rate — see Methodology.
